Port De Sóller
Port De Sóller

Surrounded by numerous orange and lemon groves, this pretty valley on the northern coast of Mallorca is steeped in history and still retains a French influence dating back to the times when France was more readily accessible by sea than the dangerous journey south through the mountains. Port de Sóller is a natural harbour which today is home to a still thriving fishing fleet with its own wholesale fish market. The town, port and adjacent villages have retained nearly all of their charm, resisting the onslaught of modern tourism to become a haven for those who appreciate the "other " Mallorca with the delights of a traditional holiday thrown in. Plenty of restaurants etc are available between the two areas, linked by tram or a short drive and a public pool and "pay and play" tennis courts have recently been built near the old town. Sóller has a pretty, shelving shingly beach, uncommon with the northwestern coastline which is predominantly rocky.
